Starting a Small Business

If you are having a hard time in this current bad economy or have just been considering branching out on your own for a while and finally decided to go for it, starting your own small business can be a rewarding, meaningful career move. It can be a great opportunity to work with something you are passionate about all day, every day, be it selling great books, making great sandwiches or just making a great income.

Starting your own small business means that you will be in charge of your own financial situation, but it also means that you will have a lot more on your plate than you might as just another employee. Starting the business means that you are automatically the boss and it is up to you as to how well the business does. You are responsible for making sure your business model works well, for creating the business infrastructure and keeping it up, hiring your employees and making sure they are getting paid on time, the list goes on and on.

Most successful small businesses require many of the same steps in starting up. The first and most important of these is research. You are going to need to spend a lot of time looking into other businesses of the same type as the one you wish to start up and see how they do it. Take your time and make a note of what works well and what perhaps does not work so well. Pay attention to businesses that have done very well to see if they are doing anything special as well as those which have failed to learn what to avoid if you can.

You will also need to pay close attention to other companies selling the same type of products as you wish to sell and note where they are getting them from, how much they pay for them (wholesale) how much they are selling them for (retail) and how they find their customers or how those customers find them. Once again, find what works and put that knowledge to good use.

If all this sounds like a lot of work, you’re right and it should be. You need to understand your business inside and out if you want to have any chance of success. That said, there are still a great many pitfalls that you as someone new to the game may fall prey to even with the best research.

These are things that might be avoided but only if you have been there before and know what to look for. Most of these setbacks can be overcome, but some can be fatal. One option and a great way to avoid some of these growing pains is to hire a team of business solutions experts to help you through the business design process.

These are people who have been there before, if fact they help design business plans for a living and if they can’t see a problem coming, odds are no one could have.

Once you know where you are going with your business plan, the real fun begins. The next step is to finance the startup, which most people do with bank loans, a chunk of their own savings, or if they are lucky and well connected, a venture capitalist who takes an interest in their work. There are other, more creative ways to do this, but these are the most common.

Next you will need to get a website that sells and builds your reputation as an expert. Now a days no business is considered reputable unless they have a web presence, and if you can establish yourself right off the bat as a credible expert in your field, whatever that may be, you will be ahead of the game.

Once you’ve done all the preliminary steps, now is the time to solidify everything and develop a rock solid business plan. You need to pin down every aspect of your business, where the money comes from, where it goes, product sales and acquisition, all of it. You need names, phone numbers and email addresses, prices and interest rates. By now there should be no blank spaces left in your business plan.

From there, you can get your consultants to plan additional revenue streams to expand on your business for the future. A good business should always be planning for expansion in the future.

Any successful small business starts out with the same thing: a good plan. Before you ever sell your first item, create your first product or cut your first deal, you are going to have to sit down and do some homework. Just like most complicated electronics or self assembly furniture instruction manuals begin with a warning that you should read the entire manual through completely before you start to assemble anything, you need to create your own business instruction manual before you start out.
